2009-08-21 10:45:27 As I was sitting in the Diamond Belle Saloon feeling like I took a giant leap back in time, as the piano man played in the background and the saloon girls were serving drinks with outfits on that would make an old man blush, I realized just how unique and fun Durango is. Just as we finished up our appetizer, a man walked in through the swinging doors dressed from head to toe in cowboy attire and started to loudly converse with the bartender, who was also dressed as if he was truly from the early 1900's. The cowboy was demanding shots and making quite a scene when the sheriff walked in. I have to say, at first I had no idea what was going on. I just thought this guy was a little off his rocker and continued to chat with my husband about the day's activities. Then the sheriff and the ole cowboy really started to argue and everyone turned to stare. At this time in the afternoon the place was packed. Then I realized we were in the middle of an old western show!! The saloon girls stepped aside and the verbal battle continued with neither looking to back down. As the confrontation came to a boil they made the decision to take it outside. My husband and I looked at each other, and like everyone else, we left our table and followed the big cowboy hats and spurs outside. They were standing in the street a few yards apart, when the afternoon crowd of Downtown Durango watched with anticipation and suddenly realized . . . it was a shootout!! As the two men stared each other down and the crowd became quiet . . . POP, POP, POP. I don't think you understand just how loud and unprepared I was for that. I jumped so high the people to my left started to laugh and then the cowboy dropped dead. Everyone started to cheer and then they began to take pictures with the two actors. As long as I have lived here in Durango, I have never seen the shootout on Main Street, it was awesome! That's Durango, you never know what fun activity lies around the corner, but you definitely know something is coming!!! I am blessed and so happy to live in such a wonderful place!!
